30 days has September,
April, June and November
All the rest have 31
Except February’s with 28
And Leap Year’s 29

That is the verse that we learned as children, my brother and I. And yet I have heard others. This weekend, someone was saying that

there are many, many versions. What have you heard?

Hope you have a good day and until next time, Happy Gardening.

"If February give much snow, A fine summer it doth fore show” ~English proverb

Yes, February can bring snow. Only today or tomorrow though. Hard to believe that it is the end of February. Time sure is flying by!!!

Our thoughts are now turned to the newness, freshness of spring and then summer. The bright color that will explode from one's garden/yard, oh how grand! What colors do you like in your yard? Have heard people say that they have areas in their yard that is devoted to one color, one color alone. An area that has only white color ... white daylilies, white roses, white spirea, white peonies and on and on. Or a red area ... yellow area .... sounds like a fun idea to me.

Daylilies make a good perennial for flower beds. They come in a variety of colors. And many cultivars are reblooming. With six hours of sunlight per day, the daylilies will show off their magnificence.

Several rebloomers that we offer:

Cranberry Chalice

Butterscotch Ruffles

Cabbage Flower

Hope you have a great day and until next time, Happy Gardening.

All my life, I have tried to pluck a thistle and plant a flower whenever the flower would grow in thought and mind. ~Abraham Lincoln

"He knows no winter, he who loves the soil,
For, stormy days, when he is free from toil,
He plans his summer crops, selects his seeds
From bright-paged catalogues for garden needs.
When looking out upon frost-silvered fields,
He visualizes autumn's golden yields;
He sees in snow and sleet and icy rain
Precious moisture for his early grain;
He hears spring-heralds in the storm's ' turmoil
He knows no winter, he who loves the soil."

- Sudie Stuart Hager

Let's coin a phrase from a mid 60's television show, Lost in Space, when "The Robot" says to young Will Robinson, "Warning, Warning". Well that is what forecasters are saying for today ... as a front approaches, bringing warm temps, winds and the possibility of high wind gusts and storms, before returning to more seasonable weather for the weekend. So gonna now step out, check inventory in a few rows of daylilies and work as long as the weather allows.

Hope you have a good day and until next time, Happy Gardening.

"Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour."
- John Boswell

Winter, where will it be today in North Carolina? Weather forecasters say that it is supposed to be near 75 degrees here. Will become windy with wind gusts as front approaches. You can always check out our weather at OFW.

How about more daylily photos?

"There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you ..... In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself."
- Ruth Stout

Snow has melted, daylilies recipient, life is good. When perusing the daylily rows yesterday, there were signs of growth, from the cold 24 degrees Monday morning, to 50 degrees yesterday afternoon. This time of year brings such "awe", wouldn't you say? Something new to see each and every day. Hope you will take time to spend it outdoors for a moment or longer.

Want to share a few photos of daylily blossoms. A sight of things to
come ....

"Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle ... a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl. And the anticipation nurtures our dream."
- Barbara Winkler

And our winter brought us Snow, yes we had snow ..... which began falling yesterday evening, ending sometime during the night.

At 530 AM as I looked out the window with the flashlight glistening on the snow, there was about two inches. Then by this photo time, snow was melting. Ground temp is warming.

Here are the daylilies, blanketed with a light dusting of snow. Patiently awaiting the spring sun to warm the earth. Then shooting forth from the soil to bring smiles to everyone.

Hope you have a good day and until next time, Happy Gardening.

"Surely as cometh the Winter, I know
There are Spring violets under the snow."

- R. H. Newell

How has your weekend been? Things good here at Oakville Farm. Today's weather is much more winter-like ... 30's, rain, with possibility of turning to snow before dawn. Check out OFW for our current weather stats.

More posters ... thanks all !!! Hope you have a good evening and until next time, Happy Gardening.

Late February, and the air's so balmy snowdrops and crocuses might be fooled into early blooming. Then, the inevitable blizzard will come, blighting our harbingers of spring, and the numbed yards will go back undercover. In Florida, it's strawberry season— shortcake, waffles, berries and cream will be penciled on the coffeeshop menus.
- Gail Mazur

February 18, yes it can be said that this is late February. And yes, our crocus and daffodils are blooming. Yet, weather forecasters say that Sunday night, conditions may bring snow flurries. That would be the first of the season for us here at Oakville Farm. We optimistically await!

Want to send out a BIG thanks to all who are sending posters. Some are "shareable" others, well, let's just say "not so much"!
Keep sending them ....

Hope you have a good day and until next time, Happy Gardening.

I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape - the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn't show. ~Andrew Wyeth

Yes, this is winter. Aren't we glad to be able to experience each wonderful season? Weather has turned cold here for the next couple of days. Yesterday was windy ... gusty to say the least. Check out OFW for current weather conditions here at Oakville Farm.

Winter has been very very mild this year. Flowers/plants/shrubs are blooming that should be dormant. Trees that should be resting, are setting buds. Oh my! Mother Nature has so much to
offer during the winter months....

Such as, bird watching. Do you set out birdseed feeders? Suet feeders? if you don't set out feeders, there is much fowl activity going on outside your window. Consider participating in the annual bird count activity for several days during the month of February. The 15th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count is set for February 17 - 20, 2012. Make it a family event, getting
children involved....ponder, how many different birds will we see? What colors of birds will we see? Who will see the most birds? Get ready with binoculars, pencil, paper. The website has a good page for "kids". Look out from your kitchen window, your work window, from a classroom window....see the wonder of birds.

You may see a Robin

Or a Cardinal

Hope you have a good day. And keep looking out that window ... at all Mother Nature has to offer.

Our Oakville Farm website is still down for maintenance, however it should be up and running soon. Will let you know. Until then, keep your daylily list handy, we may just have the daylily to fit your needs.

Until next time, Happy Gardening.
