Good Morning...

Hello to all,

HEMEROCALLIS...what does it mean? It is the scientific name for daylily. The word comes from the Greek meaning hemera day + kallos beauty. Meaning that each bloom opens for a day. And oh are they beautiful. Most blooms open during the day (diurnal), some open at late evening (nocturnal) and continue to bloom during the next day; also called extended. Well, just some info for you to ponder.

Now on to bloomers....

Bonanza
late bloomer, 5" bloom, orange

All for now. Glad to have you at our Oakville Farm blogspot. Until next time, Happy Gardening.

Cloudless Sky

Good Morning all. Guess I just did make it morning...it is 11:30 AM already. Where does the time go?

Went out this morning and took 243 photos of daylilies and the farm. I soooo do love taking photos. We have a few new blooming daylilies here at Oakville Farm, most continue to be current bloomers.

While in the house viewing the new bloomers on the computer, Barbara, a loyal customer from Granville County, came by to get a new stash of daylilies. She bought some beautiful specimen. Thanks Barbara, see ya next time.

New bloomers....

Bridget
small bloom, black red self

Roger Mercer
large bloom, rebloomer, double, gold self

Trahlyta
large bloom, rebloomer, fragrant, grayed violet

A note about Trahlyta...the above photo was taken at 7:30 AM while the bloom was out of direct sun. This is a true coloring of the bloom...grayed violet with purple eyezone and green throat. A clump of these daylily blooms is very striking.

Bama Bound

Saturday

PHEW!!!! Oh yes, it is hot. Not the 100 degrees, yet. But factoring in the humidity, it does not take long to become "wilted", human or flower.

I was traveling Thursday and Friday. Found several places between here and the Outer Banks that had blooming daylilies. I took photos of the them and have plans to show you the daylily gardens on our blogspot during the winter months. So stay tuned.

Today hope everyone, here in our area, is being very very careful while outside. Keep hydrated and wear plenty of sunscreen. That heat can catch ya off guard and you will feel poorly later. Guess that is the Mother in me talking. My Mother was an RN (registered nurse) and she gave my brother and I good health care advice.

Continue to check out our website: http://www.oakvillefarm.com/ for all available daylilies.

Guess my break time is over, so will go outside for a bit.
Until next time, Happy Gardening.

Rainy Morn'...

Good Morning,

I attempted to add daylily photos last night as I was blogging, but internet went down. It is back up and running for now, so here are photos of new daylily blooms from yesterday...

Big Kiss
large bloom, fragrant, double, light peach color

The term "double" refers to the bloom having an additional set of segments, one inside the other.

Coral Dawn
large bloom, rebloomer, coral pink

Holly Hill Strutter
bloom size over 7", lavendar rose blend

Marse Connell
spider

The term "spider" refers to the flower whose petal length is four times it's width or more.

For this daylily, I want to add our findings from here at Oakville Farm. Marse Connell is a tall growing specimen. It is deep red and gold in coloring. It looks velvety. A beautiful background daylily for a garden.

El Desperado
5" bloom, mustard yellow with purple eyezone

Pink Super Spider
10" bloom, crispate, rose/pink/cream

The term "crispate" refers to an unusual bloom form. This is a pinched crispate form. The petals are pinched/creased. Very pretty bloom.

I am currently looking out the window and looks like the rain has ended. So, I will also end here and go out to see what new daylilies are blooming.

Visit our website: http://www.oakvillefarm.com/ for all of our daylilies and prices. Until next time, Happy Gardening.

Manic Monday?

Remember that song? 1984 I think. Oh my, does that mean I am getting old, remembering songs from 20 years ago? Well, I guess so!

Our weather was overcast and comfortable today. There were rains all around us, but nothing here. We did see many new daylily blooms today. And the ones that have been blooming, continue to show their daylily beauty.

Sunday, June 14, 2009

Good Afternoon...

Happy Flag Day

PHEW...it is HOT today. Temps are in the high 80's and humidity level is in low 70's, which makes for a very humid day. I believe that the heat index is 104, YIKES!! Time to take a break inside and drink some water.

New bloomers this morning include.....

Duke of Durham
large bloom, copper brown with purple eyezone

Druid's Chant
large bloom, rebloomer, deep lavendar with purple eyezone

Check out our website: http://www.oakvillefarm.com for detailed descriptions and prices of our daylilies. By the way, today we added new daylilies for sale. Be sure and check them out.

The term "throat" refers to the area that is the innermost section deep in the daylily.

Elegant Candy
rebloomer, pink with red eyezone

The term "eyezone" refers to a darker colored area on the tepals. A ring around the flower, if you will.

June 10...

Good Morning,

Can you believe that it is the second week of June? Where does the time go?

Many places in central North Carolina experienced too much rain yesterday afternoon and last night. We were one of the fortunate ones...a nice quick shower. And after inspecting the daylilies this morning......the open blooms had nice raindrops laying so peacefully on them. With overcast skies and the rain, daylilies, grasses, tree leaves and alike were so beautiful. The early morning is a great time to be outside enjoying all the beauty that nature has to offer.

This new bloomer for today is one of my favorites. Although it is not a rebloomer, I really like the bicolor. Bicolor refers to the sepals and petals as being totally different in color. Petals are the inner segments and sepals are the outer segments on the bloom.

Karen Sue
large bloom, bicolor, rose and cream color

All for now. Want to deadhead our Charles Johnston.

When you want to check out all of our daylilies, please visit us at: www.oakvillefarm.com. Until next time. Happy Gardening.

New Day...

Yesterday got away from me and I did not "blog ya". Had fog in the morning, so daylily photos were not taken. But this morning, things were looking real good.

French Frenzy
large/thick bloom, rebloomer, gold

Mosel
small, rebloomer, near white

Pat Mercer
large bloom, orange

The Pat Mercer has a gorgeous bloom. It is bright, almost glowing. It makes a statement; showy. A very nice specimen!

An update on the squash shown in a previous blog...it was DELICIOUS! Other garden items are doing well. Even have a small green tomato. Now...what is better in the summertime than a red ripe fresh tomato sandwich? YUM!

Until next time. Happy Gardening.

Sunday....

Hey Everybody,

What a busy day. My sister and husband wanted one of our goat kids, so I packed up a doeling (doe aged under one year), and drove east to Conway NC. She and a friend met me, picked up the goat and headed back home. When I returned home, we had daylily customers. What great folks. We had a grand time laughing while they picked out the perfect daylily for their yard. Then our repeat customers from yesterday returned to get enough daylilies to finish out their flower beds. Another good visit, laughing and telling stories about landscape boxes, driveway flowers, and alike. Then lunch, more customers and many phone calls about daylilies. Want to thank Suzette for comments about our blog. Hope other folks enjoy it as well!

Did not get a chance to get photos of new bloomers today, but have bloomers from this first week of June. Will share these photos tonight and bring many more to the blog tomorrow!

Siloam Art Moore
small bloom, peach pink
Mokan Butterfly
large bloom, near white, lavendar eyezone

Doug Mayfield
small bloom, rose pink bloom

Until next time, Happy Gardening.

RAIN...

Yes, we have had a good rain this afternoon. Began around 3 PM and is just letting up. I am soooo excited about the fact that there may be new BLOOMERS tomorrow morning. And speaking of tomorrow morning, it is the 2009 official opening day here at Oakville Farm. We have had many fine customers this season and we appreciate each of you. So....now is the time for more folks! Come one, come all....repeat customers, new customers and visitors. Check out our many blooming daylilies.

Have a good evening. Until next time, Happy Gardening.

Good Morning...

Hello,

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Oh Yeah...

Hello Everyone,

Hope all is well with you. We are hoping for rain. Temps have been HIGH and winds have been blowing for three days now. When our neighbor, 5 miles west of here called this afternoon, she said they were having a downpour, for a short while at least. We were/have not seen any.

A customer asked about high "bud count". The daylily, named WALLY, which is currently blooming, has a high bud count. The American Hemerocallis Society has a terminology page on their website and part of their definition of bud count says: "Since each daylily flower is only open one day, the number of buds each scape carries is indicative of how many flowers the plant will bear on a single scape." I counted about 20 buds on this scape. WOW, that will be a long blooming scape!

HOT

Oh yes, it was very hot today. More like mid summer weather!

We have hummingbirds! Have had one feeder with just a cup of sweetened drink for about 2
weeks. Then yesterday I saw two hummers, so I made two feeders of drink. Then today, I saw one feeder that had 5 hummers on it and one that went whizzing by...so now have a total of three feeders with one cup of drink each. And boy are the birds drinking.

More bloomers...

Whooperee
large bloom (6.5" or larger), rebloomer, red

Unmade Bed
large bloom, yellow

All for now. Until next time, Happy Gardening.

Hello

Hi Everyone,

Hope y'all had a good weekend. We had a grand time with the family. And now with Sherman at work and everyone gone...it sure is quiet around here. Guess a walk through the yard will be good.....

First, walking through the garden I spied the yellow crook neck squash, blooming...

then on closer inspection, noticed that a second bloom has turned into a squash. Won't be long now...cut up, sauteed with fresh onions from the garden! YUM....YUM
After perusing the garden, I walked through our daylilies and found several new bloomers...

Barbie Doll
Tall, small bloom, lavendar
Wally
Double, red
Navaho Blanket
spider, yellow orange
The weather is gorgeous today, not a cloud in the sky, low humidity and temps in high 70's. With that said, I am going out to weed and take more photos.

Until next time. Happy Gardening.
