Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint, and the soil and sky as canvas. ~Elizabeth Murray
What a great way to think of a garden/yard. A palette.
The colors ... What is your favorite color? And what color combinations please your eye?
The textures ... How do textures affect you? Visual or tactile texture?
The smells ... What is your favorite smell? What smells are in your yard?
Colors ... I like so many colors. And combinations of colors are endless. I like contrasting color in the garden/yard, ie a dark fence post against a yellow blossom, shades of green against other shades of green, Nandina berries among their leaves/branches. Endless, just endless color combinations. Some combos that we make, some that Mother Nature provides!
And textures ... texture is an aspect of Mother Nature. I like yard art, ie a metal windmill paired with soft purple climbing clematis, or an old cedar fence post covered with Carolina Jasmine. Yard art does not have to be a "purchase", it can be found in Nature, dead tree, piece of old farm equipment. Just look around ... reuse, recycle, reinvent. Fun, interesting and creative ...
Smells ... there are certainly smells emitted from the yard/garden. I like the smell of blooming Gardenias, freshly cut herbs for a meal and freshly cut/baled grass hay from the field. Sometimes there is the smell of freshly sprayed fertilizer/herbicide, hog parlor down the road ... necessary, not always good and only temporary! Take it all in :)
